Getting Set Up for Advanced & Expert Golfers
Who Is This Drill For?
If you're just getting started with the Stance IQ and you've been playing golf for a few years or are very familiar with your stance width and ball position for each club, then this is for you.
Equipment Needed
Stance IQ training mat
Chalk Pen
Golf towel or head cover
Tee
Hitting Net / Range / Sim
Skill Levels
Advanced: You're aware of your preferred ball positions and stance widths and/or achieve a relatively consistent ball flight from your own preferred positions and can recognise when something is out with your swing and/or ball flight.
Expert: You're aware of your preferred ball positions and stance widths and actively adjust your stance width and ball position to change your strike and ball flight.
Stage 1 - Adding Preferred Ball Positions
The goal of this first stage is to record your own preferred ball positions, without being influenced by the recommended ball positions.
Step by Step
- Drop the mat between your feet and your hitting area and align with your target. Ensure you are not standing on or hitting off the mat.
- Cover the recommended ball positions with a towel or head cover.
- Grab the club you want to start with (we recommend a 7 iron) and place the ball where you would normally hit from for that club.
- Align the inside of your left foot with the '0' marker on the bottom ruler.
- Place your right foot where you would normally for that club, disregarding the recommended stance widths.
- Hit 5-10 balls from this normal setup position towards a target, with the goal of making clean contact with the ball and getting as close to the target as possible.
- Take note of where you are positioning the ball with a tee and remove the covering.
- Mark your preferred ball position with the chalk marker in the blank space on the ball position ruler. You could use the number of the club (eg. '7') or 'M' for Mid-iron, or whatever makes sense to you.
- Repeat for other clubs until you have all of your preferred ball positions.
Stage 2 - Adding Preferred Stance Widths
The goal of this stage is to record your own preferred stance widths, without being influenced by the recommended stance widths.
Step by Step
- Drop the mat between your feet and your hitting area and align with your target. Ensure you are not standing on or hitting off the mat.
- Cover the recommended stance widths with a towel or head cover.
- Grab the club you want to start with (we recommend a 7 iron) and setup to the ball as you would normally for that club, disregarding the recommended ball positions.
- Ensure the inside of your left foot is aligned with the '0' marker on the bottom ruler.
- Place your right foot at your normal stance width for that club, disregarding the recommended stance widths.
- Hit 5-10 balls from your normal setup position towards a target, with the goal of making clean contact with the ball and getting as close to the target as possible.
- Take note of where the inside of your right foot is positioned with a tee and remove the covering.
- Mark the inside of your right foot as your preferred stance width for that club with the chalk marker in the blank space on the stance width ruler. You could use the number of the club (eg. '7') or 'M' for Mid-iron, or whatever makes sense to you.
- Repeat for other clubs until you have all of your preferred stance widths.
Tips
Take photos of your preferred setup positions as you go so that you can refer back to them later and to keep a record just in case your marks get rubbed off during transit or when handling of the mat.
Stage 3 - Hitting from Preferred Positions
You now have your preferred setup positions to refer to whenever you're hitting at the range / net / sim. Use these to warm up and create more consistency in your setup and reduce the variability introduced by inconsistency in your setup.
