Getting Set Up for Beginner & Intermediate Golfers
Who Is This Drill For?
If you're just getting started with the Stance IQ and you didn't know your stance width is supposed to change with each club, or are hitting from the same ball position regardless of which iron you are hitting, then his is a great place to start.
Equipment Needed
Stance IQ training mat
Chalk Pen
Hitting Net / Range / Sim
Skill Levels
Beginner: You're unaware of ball positions and stance widths and/or struggle with consistent strike and ball flight.
Intermediate: You're aware that ball position and stance is supposed to change, but not sure by how much.
Stage 1 - Start with Recommended
The goal of this first stage is simply to familiarise yourself with what would be considered a standard (recommended) setup.
Step by Step
- Drop the mat between your feet and your hitting area and align with your target. Ensure you are not standing on or hitting off the mat.
- Grab the club you want to start with (we recommend a 7 iron) and place the ball inline with the corresponding recommended ball position on your mat.
- Align the inside of your left foot with the '0' marker on the bottom ruler.
- Align the inside of your right foot with the corresponding recommended stance width for the club you've chosen.
- Hit 5-10 balls from this setup position towards a target, with the goal of making clean contact with the ball and getting as close to the target as possible.
- Rotate between clubs to get an idea of how each setup position feels, both visually from a stance width and ball perspective, as well as in terms of contact.

Things to Note
The goal of the narrower stance width for wedges is to create a steeper swing arc / angle of attack. The middle ball position is to make it easier to take loft off your wedges and make ball first contact.
The goal of the wider long iron/woods stance width is the create a flatter swing arc / angle of attack and help with sweeping the ball. The goal of the forward ball position is to take less loft off the club.
