Skill Levels
Beginner - Intermediate: You're now aware of the different ball positions and stance widths, but you'd like to practise these setup positions.
Advanced - Expert: You've just changed one or more of your setup positions and you'd like to become familiar with these new positions.
Stage 1 - Ball Position Familiarisation
The goal of this stage is to become more familiar with your setup positions, so you can then start to implement these on the course without the mat.
Step by Step
- Choose the club you want to work on and setup to hit from your preferred ball position and stance width for that club.
- Hit 5-10 shots towards a target from that same preferred position.
- While hitting these shots, make a mental note of the ball position within your stance. This can be done by visualising the distance, estimating of the number of inches, or whatever method makes the most sense to you.
- Once you are confident in that preferred ball position, repeat for other clubs.
Stage 2 - Stance Width Familiarisation
The goal of this stage is to become more familiar with your preferred stance widths, so you can then start to use them on the course without the mat.
Step by Step
- Choose the club you want to work on and setup to hit from your preferred ball position and stance width for that club.
- Hit 5-10 shots towards a target from that same preferred position.
- While hitting these shots, make a mental note of your stance width. This can be done by visualising the distance, estimating it relative to your shoulder width, or simply paying attention to how the stance feels.
- Once you are confident in that preferred stance width, repeat for other clubs.
Note; Simply hitting from your preferred ball positions will help you become familiar with them. This can be done as block practise, doing other drills, or during simulated rounds. How quickly you become familiar with them will depend on both how easily you can visualise the positions and how often you practise.
