Stage 1 - Setup Calibration

The goal of this drill to familiarise yourself with your preferred setup positions just before heading out on the course.

Step by Step

  1. Choose the club you want to work on and setup to hit from your preferred ball position and stance width for that club.
  2. Hit 5-10 shots towards a target from that same preferred position.
  3. While hitting these shots, make a mental note of the ball position within your stance, as well as your stance width for each club.
  4. Once you are confident in that preferred setup position, repeat for other clubs.

Note: This drill is similar to the Setup Familiarisation Drill, except that you're trying to get familiar with your entire setup as possible within a certain time window. An effective protocol for assimilating this setup information right before an important round would be to perform the Setup Calibration Drill 1-3 days before your important round, and then again 1-2 hours before the start of that round.

Even if you dont have access to a range, sim or hitting net, you can do your familiarisation of stance width and ball position without hitting balls. Simply grab a club, ball and setup to your preferred positions several times, taking note of your ball position within your stance as well as your stance width. Something is better than nothing!
